Beachfront Summerland
Another outdated beachfront home has been transformed into a warm, contemporary sanctuary. This renovation highlights the potential hidden within even the most neglected properties. From the outset, it was clear that the original builders had taken shortcuts, which presented us with both the challenge—and the satisfaction—of restoring the home’s integrity.
Demolition is one of our favorite phases, allowing us to clear away past DIY missteps and substandard craftsmanship. Starting with a clean slate is essential to properly diagnose and resolve underlying structural issues, something we refer to as "getting the bones back in good shape." In this case, major concerns included sloping floors and ceilings, faulty wiring, and missing structural supports—some beams were even left unsupported by posts. In a project of this caliber, ensuring everything is plumb, level, and square was crucial, especially given the contemporary design's crisp, clean lines. Hiding these flaws under a "rustic" theme wasn’t an option.
We resolved the floor and ceiling leveling issues, addressed structural deficiencies, and upgraded the outdated electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems. Modern home automation and sophisticated lighting systems were integrated throughout. Once the structural work was complete, we collaborated with Wade Davis Design to bring the new home to life. The interior showcases a harmonious mix of dark and white oak, steel, and warm stone, with a dramatic staircase that serves as an artistic focal point, framing the ocean view as you enter.
On the exterior, we clad the home in a fresh veneer of clear Western Red Cedar in two finishes: a beachy driftwood stain and a light charred cedar, bringing the charcoal hues of the interior outdoors. Architectural bronze accents and fixtures were added, designed to patina quickly in the ocean air. The outdoor spaces were reimagined, with a firepit on the bluff overlooking the ocean and another in the interior courtyard, creating cozy gathering spots. We also revitalized the deck, adding a built-in BBQ, spa, and distinct areas for dining, lounging, and outdoor entertainment.
Though modest in size by today’s standards, the open floor plan and seamless indoor-outdoor connection give the home a sense of grandeur, fully embracing its stunning natural surroundings.
